Shafaq News / The Director General of the Ministry’s Legal Department and head of the Refugee Agreements Team of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, Mohamed Saleh Al-Hamdani stated that the Ministry approved a delay to join the agreement on the status of stateless persons (1954), as it contradicts the applicable laws of nationality and passports and there are no statelessness cases in Iraq.
He added that the other reasons for delaying the joining were inconsistent with the Iraqi constitution regarding the status of asylum and the nationality law and its inconsistency with the development taking place at the present time.
About the return of the competencies Saleh explained that the Ministry is following up with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers the possibility of removing the obstacles that prevent their return by re-granting them the privileges approved by the Iraqi government several years ago, including the appointment and customs exemption for imported furniture and vehicles.
Saleh pointed out that the ministry granted earlier the Iraqi citizenship certificate to (77) Iraqi individuals, including (32) Faili Kurds.
Authorities in Saddam Hussein's regime stripped Faili Kurds of Iraqi nationality, and worked to deport them to Iran under the pretext of subordination, before genocide was carried out against them.
