Shafaq News / The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that it had diagnosed 50 soldiers with brain injuries following a rocket attack by Iran on a military base in Iraq this month, which is more than the army announced earlier.

Initially, US President Donald Trump and other senior officials said that the attack by Iran on January 8 had not killed or injured any American soldier.

"To date, 50 American soldiers have been diagnosed with brain injuries," Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Campbell said in a statement about the injuries resulting from the attack on Ain al-Assad base in western Iraq.

Symptoms of a concussive injury include headache, dizziness, sensitivity to light and nausea.

Campbell said 31 of the 50 military personnel had been treated in Iraq and returned to service, including 15 who had been diagnosed recently.

He added that 18 of the wounded soldiers were transferred to Germany for further evaluation and treatment, and another was transferred to Kuwait and returned to service.

"This is a brief overview and the numbers may change,” he added.

The Pentagon had announced in a previous statement on the matter on Friday that the number of wounded is 34.

Trump appeared to play down the injuries, saying last week, "I heard they had a headache and a few other things."

The Pentagon data indicates that about 408 thousand American soldiers have been diagnosed with brain injuries since 2000.
