Shafaq News / The politician Najeh Al-Mizan revealed on Thursday, the truth and details of what he is promoting to form a region for Sunni Arabs in Iraq.

Al-Mizan, one of the most prominent supporters of the project said in an interview with Shafaq News, that the Sunni region project dates back to 2011, after the provinces of Diyala, Salahuddin and Nineveh had already submitted requests to convert to a region, as each province would be a region, with the exception of Anbar which did not take a clear position, but was in favor of this project.

He added, in 2011, the provincial councils above voted to convert each province into a region, and official letters were transferred at the time to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, but the issue was procrastinated, and he did not send the letters to the commission until the procedures were completed to complete the conversion of those provinces into regions.

He added, "We have finished nearly 50% of the conversion of provinces into regions and after the formation of the new government, there will be a new movement to discuss the official letters in this regard, in order to transfer the letters to the Electoral Commission to carry out the rest of the fundamental procedures, including opening boxes for three months to people’s voting and this will happen after the formation of the new government. "

Al-Mizan talked about the existing project, which he described as a "lie" promoted by the Islamic Party, "as it brings together provinces in one region under the title (Sunni region)”.

The Iraqi constitution states that "every province or more has the right to form a region upon a referendum request."
