Shafaq News / The leader in the Popular Mobilization Forces  (PMF) , Muhammad al-Basri commented on Tuesday, on assigning Barham Salih, President of the Republic, to Adnan al-Zorfi to form the new Iraqi government, and fears that the latter would dissolve PMF, as was rumored.

Al-Basri told Shafaq News, "If Adnan Al-Zorfi is voted for in the Iraqi parliament, I do not think that he will work in the transitional period to dissolve PMF, for there are major tasks awaiting him, on top of which is amending the constitution and preparing for early elections. It is too early to talk about dissolving PMF, as it is a security institution that remains as long as the Iraqi parliament remains, voting in the Parliament is the key to resolving this matter.

He added, "The popular crowd has approved a law in the Iraqi parliament, and it is not permissible except by a law in parliament, and what is approved by a law is not canceled or dissolved by a decision, but rather by a law inside parliament, and this is very unlikely."

He said, "We are under the religious authority orders, and it has stressed that the PMF is not allowed to interfere in political matters, the selection of Al-Zorfi is a political matter and we are a military institution."

The President of the Iraqi Republic ,Barham Saleh assigned Adnan Al-Zorfi to form the government in Iraq, where he has a month to form the cabinet.

Al-Zorfi is a leader in the victory coalition headed by Haider al-Abadi, and he is also a former governor of Najaf.

Al-Zorfi's assignment came within a constitutional deadline of 15 days, which was set after Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi stepped down from the task of forming the government early this month, after he failed to persuade the Sunnis and Kurds to support his government formation and his government program.

Unprecedented popular protests forced the government of Adel Abdul Mahdi to submit its resignation in early December 2019, and since that time, the formation of a new government has not been decided due to deep differences among the political blocs as well as the popular movement's rejection of most of the names presented.

Al-Zorfi was scheduled to be assigned yesterday evening, but the opposition of Shiite forces postponed the matter.
