Shafaq News / The Sadrist movement, led by Muqtada al-Sadr said on Thursday, that the government of Adnan al-Zorfi will not pass in the parliament if it is formed according to the quota system, a system in which successive governments have been in effect since 2003.

"The Sadrist movement refuses to form the new Iraqi government, according to the quotas, and rejects any pressure on Prime Minister-designate Adnan al-Zorfi, by some political parties to obtain some ministries, and we refuse to pass any government according to quotas and political pressure,” said the leader in the movement, Hakim Al-Zamli to Shafaq News.

Al-Zamli said that "the Sadrist movement will have a position, if the political forces continue to pressure and use political blackmail in order to obtain some positions, and the government of Adnan Al-Zorfi will not pass if it is formed according to the quota system, we stop any voting on it ."

Al-Zorfi is already facing stiff opposition from Shiite movements close to Iran because of their objection to his assignment outside its framework, accusing him of being close to America, and that the latter pushed for his candidacy.

An official at the American embassy told Shafaq News that the embassy respected the sovereignty of Iraq and the will of the Iraqis and did not interfere in the mandating mechanism of selecting Adnan Al-Zorfi.

The President of the Republic, Barham Salih has commissioned the head of the parliamentary "Victory" bloc and the former governor of Najaf, Adnan al-Zorfi to form the new government within 30 days.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Iraqis want a government that preserves the country's sovereignty , provides the necessary needs, free of corruption, and protects human rights.

Pompeo tweeted that "if the Iraqi Prime Minister places these interests as his top priority, he will have American and international support."

Al-Zorfi’s mandate comes after the failure of the political forces to reach an agreement on the candidate for prime minister, which indicates that Al-Zorfi will face objections in the Parliament.

Al-Zorfi is the second official in charge of forming the government, after the former Prime Minister-designate Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi stepped down earlier this month after he failed to persuade the Kurds, Sunnis and some Shiite forces to give confidence to his cabinet.

The unprecedented popular protests forced the government of Adel Abdul Mahdi to submit its resignation in early / early December 2019, and since that time, the formation of a new government has not been decided due to deep differences among the political blocs as well as the popular movement's rejection for most of the presented names.

The demonstrators insist that the political elite accused of corruption and waste of state money, which has ruled since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003, must be  gone and held accountable.
