Shafaq News / Kurdistan Democratic Party leader , Masoud Barzani confirmed on Wednesday that March agreement forced the Iraqi regime, for the first time, to recognize the rights of the people of Kurdistan.

Today, Barzani posted a message on Twitter saying, " Today marks the 50th anniversary of the March 11 Agreement, an event that due to the resilience and sacrifices of the Peshmerga and people of Kurdistan, compelled the Iraqi regime to formally and for the first time recognize the rights of our people.

March agreement was signed on March 11, 1970 between the Iraqi government and national leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani in the aftermath of the first Iraqi-Kurdish war, in order to create an autonomous region, consisting of the three Kurdish provinces and other adjacent areas that were identified according to the census as having a Kurdish majority.

The plan also provides the representation of Kurds in government bodies, to implement this plan in four years.

In his time, this was the most important attempt to resolve the long-standing Iraqi-Kurdish conflict. By it, the Iraqi government recognized the national rights of the Kurds with guarantees for the Kurds to participate in the Iraqi government and the use of the Kurdish language in educational institutions, but a definitive solution was not reached on the issue of Kirkuk, which remained pending the results of statistics to know the percentage of different nationalities in Kirkuk city.
