The Head of al-Fatih Coalition arrived in the Kurdistan Region capital of Erbil on Thursday and met separately with the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) as well as the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Hadi al-Amiri, the al-Fatih leader, met with KDP President Masoud Barzani to discuss the political situation in Iraq and the recent developments in the country’s political process, a statement from Barzani’s office read.

Both leaders highlighted the events that took place in the Iraqi Parliament on Oct. 2 related to electing Iraq’s new president, the statement said.

According to the statement, Amiri expressed his concerns that the Kurdish blocs were unable to elect a united candidate for the presidency. He also hoped the Kurdish parties would play an active role in the process of forming a new government in Iraq.

In another meeting, Amiri met with KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani to discuss the Iraqi political process as well as the next steps, a statement on the KRG’s website read.

The two called for a healthy process that meets the demands and hopes of Iraq’s different components, it added.

Both sides reiterated that the political process should represent all components to ensure continued stability and success and the upholding of the principles of consensus, balance, and partnership.

Amiri highlighted the importance of the Kurdistan Region’s effective partnership in the Iraqi political process and underlined the need to resolve issues between Erbil and Baghdad through the constitution.

In another part of the meeting, both leaders expressed support for the Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Adel Abdul Mahdi.

Amiri also met with Masrour Barzani, the Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC).

During the meeting, Chancellor Barzani hoped the prime minister-designate finds quick solutions to the stranded issues between Erbil and Baghdad within the framework of the constitution and works to provide essential and daily services to the people of Iraq.

Amiri’s visit comes after KDP leader Masoud Barzani expressed his concern over the mechanism used in electing Iraq’s new president which he said was outside of the Kurdish consensus. Masoud Barzani also noted the post does not represent the people of Kurdistan.
